The grandmother typically picks her own numbers when she plays the Powerball and Mega Millions games, but was given a winning quick-pick ticket during her Sunday, Feb. 26 Wegmans visit, according to Maryland Lottery officials.

The self-serve vending machine would not let the lucky lady pick her own numbers, which ultimately led to the grandmother with a $50,000 third-tier prize in the Monday, Feb. 27 Powerball drawing.

However, it wasn't until the day after the drawing that the 78-year-old checked her tickets, quickly realizing that she had won the massive five-figure prize.

“I always check my tickets at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee,” she told Lottery officials. “I have to say, I was happy and upset at the same time, because I missed the jackpot by just one number.”

The retired grocery store worker and her daughter happily claimed the winning prize, and plan to use the money to help fund vacations to see family around the country.
